Questions for all parties in the 2020 BC Election
Question 01:
With COVID-19, reported racially based hate crimes are up over 800% in Vancouver this year, targeting Asians and especially Chinese. If your party forms government, what immediate and longer-term concrete plans will your party commit to implement to address this alarming issue?
BC Green Party:
To solve this problem long term, we need compassionate education. People are bigoted because they are confused, because they are scared, and because they aren’t properly educated. I do not know yet how to specifically protect Chinese Canadians, so I would first come to you and ask for your guidance — because I can’t understand your experience, I believe it’s important that I listen first. Then together we would implement both short and long term plans to address this alarming rise of hate crimes.
BC Liberal Party:
We are truly fortunate to live in a province with rich cultural diversity and heritages. It is one of our great strengths. That’s why we must work to eliminate systemic-racism in ourinstitutions, and to ensure that the rights of all British Columbians are respected under the law. We will ensure dignity and equality for all British Columbians, by requiring police services to actively adopt anti-racism and anti-discriminatory conduct policies and work with police to defuse conflicts on our streets, by increasing the use of non-armed community-policing patrols.
BC NDP:
We made some good progress in our first term, restoring the BC Human Rights Commission, and undertaking a province-wide anti-racism tour that led to the creation of the new Resilience BC Anti-Racism Network, which helps communities prevent or respond to incidents of racism and hate.
We know there is more work to do. A re-elected BC NDP government will build on our work in our first term by:
- Delivering a new Anti-Racism Act, following a full stakeholder consultation to look at how we can improve on our 25-year-old Multiculturalism Act so that it better serves everyone in BC
- Working with BC’s new Human Rights Commissioner and other stakeholders to introduce legislation that paves the way for race-based data collection essential to reducing systemic discrimination and modernizing sectors like policing, health care and education.
- Making sure that the public sector is more representative of the people of our province, by increasing IBPOC (Indigenous, Black, and People of Color) representation within government and setting targets for IBPOC representation in the public sector.
- Improving the ability of immigrants to participate in the workplace by streamlining foreign credential assessments, and making sure immigrants can more easily strengthen their language skills and access job opportunities in their field of training.
- Creating a more welcoming province by setting up a new one-stop-shop for newcomers and the settlement sector to raise key issues related to immigrant integration, policy, and services.
Question 02:
Vancouver Chinatown is a gem in Vancouver and B.C., a highly valued provincial historical area, reflecting B.C.’s rich multicultural heritage. Yet, Chinatown is challenged by crimes, drugs, cleanliness, social and economic revitalization issues. What specific plans does your party have to implement to address these issues? And when?
BC Green Party:
We would start by decriminalizing drugs, scaling up safe supply, and improving the mental health supports needed to heal those struggling with drug addiction and trauma. We’re also interested in creating a committee of dedicated local residents and experts (this would include Chinatown residents) to hold our governments accountable and ensure a swift recovery of the DTES and all affected surrounding areas. We have the resources, and with the right policies in place and residents holding the government accountable, we can solve these problems.
BC Liberal Party:
We will build a real pathway to get people off drugs, and ensure safer streets and communities by increasing funding for public safety by $58 million, to help fight crime and make sure police and prosecutors have the resources they need to make our communities safer.
We will also increase addiction-treatment and recovery programs, insuring those who need help getting off drugs have a clear pathway to treatment, work to decrease crime, and to address issues of systemic racism in our society.
BC NDP:
Vancouver’s Chinatown is indeed a jewel in our province, and an important heritage community. And we know that many neighborhoods are facing particular challenges as a result of the pandemic, and the challenges facing vulnerable people in our communities. Our new $100 million strengthening communities fund will provide funding to local governments, like Vancouver, to address community concerns with cleanliness, street disorder, or community safety. This money will support local governments to address local concerns, while we continue our work to provide more community-based mental health supports, more supportive housing, and additional treatment options for those who need them.
